Farmer's Market vs. Wal-Mart


The results were predictable in some regards, surprising in others... By price, I ultimately got about twice the amount of food for my money at Wal-Mart. I didn't buy too much junk, but the temptations were many. There's just no way to beat a 73 cent can of "Great Value" Mini Beef Ravioli. The origins of products like this, though, are pretty much untraceable. The label only tells you that this item was distributed by Wal-Mart, Inc. located in Bentonville, Arkansas. I have NO idea where the tomatoes, wheat flour or beef came from, much less the salt, high fructose corn syrup, and carrots.

Wait, there were carrots in my Mini Beef Ravioli?! And while we're at it, what is textured soy protein concentrate, modified cornstarch, enzyme modified cheese, monosodium glutamate and all the random flavors and colorings? Here are my Wikipedia summaries:

Textured Soy Protein Concentrate: "Textured or texturized vegetable protein (TVP), also known as textured soy protein (TSP), soy meat, or soya meat is a meat analogue or nutritious meat extender made from defatted soy flour, a by-product of extracting soybean oil." Over 90% of soy beans in the US are genetically modified and controlled in part by Monsanto, who makes these "roundup ready"/"resistant-to-Monsanto's-pesticide ready" soy beans. Good market control, those Monsanto folks.

Modified Cornstarch: "Modified starch, starch derivatives, are prepared by physically, enzymatically, or chemically treating native starch, thereby changing the properties of the starch." It then goes on to list the million ways by which your starch may be altered. Apparently, starch can be given a positive or negative electric charge by two of those methods. Wow! Not sure I want to dig much deeper. I will need a chemistry degree to fully understand my mini ravioli.

Enzyme Modified Cheese: "A cheese curd which has been treated with enzymes to produce a concentrated cheese flavour ingredient... EMCs, which may have approximately 15-30 times the flavour intensity of natural cheese, are used to give a cheese flavour note to products..." (www.cheesescience.net , not wikipedia)

Monosodium glutamate: MSG. "A sodium salt of glutamic acid, a naturally occurring non-essential amino acid... Concerns have been raised on anecdotal grounds, and hypotheses have been put forward, that MSG may be associated with migraine headaches, food allergies in children, obesity, and hyperactivity in children."

Annatto: "A derivative of the achiote trees of tropical regions of the Americas, used to produce a yellow to orange food coloring and also as a flavoring... Also used for body painting, repelling insects and to ward off evil."

There are many many other strange things to research in processed food. I am skeptical as to the benefits of all these modifications. Some seem harmless, others maybe not. Still takes a lot of energy (and thereby pollution) to create all these mysterious chemicals and transport them to Mini Beef Ravioli and then my mouth. My Farmer's Market summary is way simpler. It's expensive, but I felt more energetic, slept better, and had no headaches during my "local and organic" week. The spinach was big and fabulous, the beef was grass-fed and tasty. Not much choice about what to eat from a Farmer's Market in WA at this point in the Spring, but healthy. Expensive and healthy. Try it for a week. Make your own decision.

Going Local at Wal-Mart and Agricultural Biotechnology

Making Choices & Milk Conspiraracy

As I shopped and progressed through my week of eating whatever I wanted from Wal-Mart, I had a few thoughts on sustainability and economies of scale. The first thing that struck me was that I had choices. There were offerings of organic produce and non-organic produce. In the case of the apples, there were choices to buy Washington apples and out of state apples. I was a little disappointed in the lack of signing on what was local or out of state or out of country. It wasn’t hard to look on the label, but most people I see shopping don’t take the time to do that.

I was pleasantly surprised, however, that my eggs were cheap and, according to the box, from Olympia (or “in state” for you non-Washingtonians). I cannot verify that the chickens were free range or raised in humane conditions. And unless the video footage on the documentaries I’ve watched was a complete set-up, the chickens were probably raised in very crowded, unsanitary conditions, being fed antibiotics to ward off disease and treated with growth hormones to increase available meat (for those going to the slaughterhouse). But the eggs were inexpensive and from Washington, and I felt good about them not traveling too far to reach me.

This brings me to the story of the chocolate milk I bought. It was produced by a Washington company (Darigold), and also happened to be the cheapest chocolate milk at Wal-Mart. This made me happy, and the chocolate milk was very tasty. As I scanned the box, I noticed an FDA label, which said something along the lines of, “The FDA has found no significant differences in milk from cows treated with rBST and cows not treated with rBST.” Darigold does not use rBST/rBGH (synthetic growth hormone for cows), which I think is nice because it’s not a chemical we’ve had decades of experience with. The acronym stands for recombinant bovine somatotropin or recombinant bovine growth hormone. It was only developed for use in 1994. It so happens that a massive biotech company, Monsanto, sued Oakhurst Dairy in Portland, OR for advertising milk produced without synthetic growth hormones. Monsanto claimed such advertising was taking business away from their rBST buying customers (dairy farmers) and encouraging milk drinkers to do business with farms that don’t use synthetic growth hormones. People were voting with their dollars and buying milk without fake hormones. Anyway, Monsanto sued, and the FDA came to the conclusion (again, without decades of research) that companies who don’t use synthetic growth hormones should still put the label on their milk defending companies who purchase and use rBST. Pretty big victory for Monsanto. Not surprising though, since Monsanto has former employees who work in the FDA and USDA. They also provide millions of dollars to lobbyist groups and research universities (check Western Washington’s list of donors) who in turn, miraculously, produce scientific data supporting the use of big biotech companies’ products.

The above story is a good example of how big companies are able to leverage political influence to purchase more power for themselves. It’s happening in most other arenas and industries as well, of course. Because might makes right. Money buys votes, opinions and even “scientific data.” But you can vote with your wallets – personally, I’m waiting for more research about the long-term effects of synthetic growth hormones in my cows. Things like cancer take a long time to develop, so it seems a bit premature to say we are in the clear at this point. We only started using rBST in the mid-90’s. Do an internet search if you’re skeptical – it wasn’t too hard for me to find the information to back up my story, but don’t take my word for it!

Ultimately, I think, regardless of whether you shop at the farmer’s market, local store, or supermarket, sustainable eating comes down to choice. I hope that the big supermarkets will follow the lead of smaller stores and farmer’s markets by making local products more obvious and available, but the only thing I can control completely is what I buy. Vote with your dollars on what you want to see more of. Be proud of yourself for doing what you’re able to do.

The Beginning, or... A Return to Awesomeness?!

I think many of us in the U.S. have become very good at ignoring all the little labels and advertisements that pop up everywhere around us. Be it on a gmail account, television or billboard, we train ourselves to (usually) focus on other things. Which isn't to say we aren't a high consuming culture, but given the thousands of ads we're exposed to, maybe we're not doing such a bad job of staying focused.
In terms of food labels, I tend to look at the price, the expiration date and not much more. But recently I have become more curious about what it is I'm eating. At 28, I don't feel old, but I have become nostalgic for the days when I was racing around the track in high school, running tons of mileage, winning titles, and miraculously never getting hurt. I felt indestructible. I can't remember ever getting sore, having a headache, or even feeling the least bit sluggish or just plain spaced out. I long for those days when my body and mind felt like they were in such a remarkable condition. So I wonder now, is there anything I could be doing to regain that physical and mental agility? I still run, and I'm in graduate school, so that's a good start. But what am I putting into my body? Could I be eating foods that better support my short and long term health? Can I do this while buying foods which have less of a negative impact on our environment AND don't drain my bank account?!

The Plan:

Week 1. Buy food from Wal-Mart in an "anything goes" way. Get whatever looks good and is cheap. Don't alter my current buying habits. This is the "control" week. I will track the food's cost, distance traveled, and questions I have about what's on the food label.
Week 2. Eat at IslandWood (my graduate program) in the dining hall with the kids we teach during the School Overnight Program. Food here is free to me and bought in ridiculous bulk, so I'll track the distance traveled and note any questions I have about where it comes from.
Week 3. Buy food exclusively from the nearby farmer's market at my home place of Bainbridge Island. Eat locally AND with the intention of following recommendations by a comprehensive nutrition resource known as "The China Study." It's a book which cites hundreds of (apparently) peer reviewed research articles and suggests (apparently) science-driven ways to eat for optimum health and disease prevention.
Weeks 4-10. Compare the prices and distances traveled by different food items. Try to figure out if eating differently has an effect on my health, my bank account, and our environment.

I will do my best to remain skeptical throughout this process, but also pay attention to how I feel about this food journey. It is a blog after all (and what would a blog be without some unnecessary feelings sharing).
